INTRODUCTION
In the last game, King Graham got the girl and returned from Kolyma with enough diamond and sapphire studded jewelry to start a collection. By all accounts, he earned his happy ending. So instead of being a direct sequel to the aforementioned happy ending, King's Quest III is set many years down the road and stars Gwydion, a teenage boy enslaved to a powerful wizard named Manannan. The game still uses the AGI text parser engine, so no new technological innovations for us to marvel at. Actually, that's a lie. There's one new innovation: copy protection. This game makes extensive use of it.
You wish to hear another story of Daventry? Very well. Then I shall tell you the tale of Gwydion, the poor slave boy with a grand destiny...
Gwydion is a lonely lad of seventeen who has lived for as long as he can remember with an evil and cruel wizard, by the name of Manannan. Gwydion gazes upon the countryside of Llewdor with longing, wishing he were free to leave. But, alas, such is not the case. Manannan treats the poor boy like his slave; ordering him about, constantly threatening him, and refusing to ever let him leave the premises. Often, Gwydion wonders who he really is, and how he came to live with the old wizard. But, Manannan offers no help in this matter.
PART 1: CLEANING THE KITCHEN
Manannan emerges and gives you a chore. In this case, clean the kitchen. You have 5 minutes of real-time to complete the task, or face consequences.
Commands to try:
- GO NORTH (outside through window) - You see chickens but no way in
- FEED CHICKENS - Not the right chore
- CLEAN KITCHEN with BROOM - This works if it's your assigned task
The timer mechanic is introduced here. Manannan will check on you at specific intervals throughout the game. If you fail to complete tasks or are caught with forbidden items, death awaits.
PART 2: COPY PROTECTION AND BEING WRONG
This section deals with the infamous copy protection system. The manual contains hints that must be typed in-game at certain points. The timer continues running even after Manannan is dealt with.
Key discovery: Random encounters exist. When approaching the cat or chicken, they may dart away. Persistence required - "It took me five tries to grab the cat."
PART 3: THE INFINITE DESICCATION
At this point we have 20+ minutes on the timer and need to complete additional tasks before Manannan returns. The path down the mountain becomes accessible.
Random encounters mentioned: Bandits outside can steal from you or be stolen from. Reloading saves recommended if bad luck strikes.
PART 5: LET'S GO SHOPPING
The general store sells essential items for spells:
- BUY SALT
- BUY FISH OIL
- BUY LARD
- BUY EMPTY POUCH
Random encounters with bandits continue to be frustrating. The walkthrough recommends aggressive reloading if stolen from.
PART 6: CASTING SPELLS
With free time before Manannan's return, spell-casting becomes the priority.
Spell ingredients in the laboratory:
- Saffron (shelf)
- Mandrake Root Powder (shelf)
- Nightshade Juice (shelf)
- Fish Bone Powder (shelf)
- Toad Spittle (shelf) - Described as "unpleasant stuff"
- Toadstool Powder (shelf)
Required spells for completion:
- Cat Cookie (turn Manannan to cat)
- Invisibility Ointment
- Storm Brew
- Flying Spell
The walkthrough mentions the spell book must be consulted by standing north of it and following instructions.
PART 7: THIS GAME HAS A PLOT?
After turning Manannan into a cat with poisoned porridge, the main antagonist is neutralized. Gwydion discovers his true identity as a prince from Daventry through the magic map found in Manannan's closet.
Commands:
- TALK TO CAT - Manannan seems unusually quiet
- KICK CAT - "You'd better get on with your quest."
The timer continues but is no longer critical. Gwydion's quest: rescue his sister Rosella and claim the throne of Daventry from the usurper Morgantha.
PART 8: LEAVING LLEWDOR
Three final spells must be prepared for the Daventry journey:
- Invisibility (requires lard base)
- Storm Brew
- Flying Spell (eagle feather + rose essence)
Items needed:
- Toadstool Powder
- Toad Spittle
- SALT - must be consumed to gain understanding of animals language
The walkthrough notes that time pressure returns as the journey to Daventry involves several timed puzzles and encounters.
KEY GAME MECHANICS NOTED BY DOUBLENEGATIVE
Timer System: Manannan enforces real-time limits on exploration phases Random Encounters: Unpredictable bandit/animal behavior requires save reload strategy Copy Protection: Manual lookup required for certain puzzle solutions Item Hiding: Must DROP ALL in Gwydion's room when Manannan returns to avoid detection Spell Crafting: Gather ingredients, consult spellbook, create items in specific ratios
